In this lesson, we share a real recording.
Helena Vacas is one of NUCLIO’s senior researchers. She has run analog missions at Alqueva and supported teacher training across three Erasmus+ projects. Maya Costa is the Portuguese protagonist of our cohort — fourteen, in Loulé, the first in her family to imagine going to university.
When Maya signed her Mission Acceptance Statement, Helena was assigned as her Tutor. Their first meeting took place over a video call from Lisbon to Loulé in late September 2026. With both Helena’s and Maya’s full GDPR-compliant consent (signed by Maya’s parents), the meeting was recorded — audio only — and made available to all SPHERE cohorts as an example of what a first Tutor meeting can look like.
The recording is 18 minutes long. Listen to it before reading the rest of this lesson. (The full transcript is below in five languages, with timestamps. The audio can be slowed, paused, or skipped. There is no test of attention.)

A few things to notice as you listen:
– Helena does not start by asking Maya about her grades. She asks about her favourite night sky.
– When Maya names her fear of speaking English, Helena does not promise her she will be fine. She tells her that her own English, twenty years ago, was much worse, and that the fear shrank slowly, not suddenly.
– Helena reads her own list of fears, in her own voice. The list has more items than Maya’s. Maya laughs nervously.
– The conversation ends with both of them agreeing to meet again in two weeks. There is no homework. The work of this meeting was the meeting.
This is what we mean by Allies Found. The relationship is not built by content. It is built by the small, deliberate moves of two people who have decided to listen to each other.
When you have your own first meeting (Lesson 3.2), you do not need to copy Helena and Maya’s conversation. You need to find your own version of it.
